Understanding Challenging Behavior
Managing challenging behaviors requires the identification of the behavior's function (through systematic assessment) as well as implementing interventions that match this function. An accurate assessment is key to decreasing challenging behaviors because the function determines how we intervene. For example, a child may throw a toy, but we need to first determine if it was done to gain something, to avoid something, or if it served a sensory purpose. If we intervene by picking the child up and redirecting him/her to a preferred activity, but the function of the throwing was for attention, we just unintentionally reinforced the behavior.
Assessments are done by a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). For more information regarding specific interventions to manage your child's behavior, click here to determine if your child is eligible to receive ABA therapy.
